Phuket or Koh Samui

Was interested in getting some opinions on which would be better for a family holiday in February this year. My husband and I will be travelling with our two children aged 8 %26amp; 11 -a nice quality hotel, with good pool and beach are essential. I have visited Phuket before albeit some 6 years ago with a twin centre with Krabi - and had a great time, although I am not sure how much will have changed in this time. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot

Phuket or Koh Samui

How did you get on with your visit. I am planning to visit either phuket or koh samui Easter 2008 with my two sons ages12 and 10. I%26#39;d really appreciate your opinion or any advice or tips

Phuket or Koh Samui

weve been to phuket twice, we first went 3 months after the tsunami, we took are 2 kids aged 10 %26amp; 15 the first time, we loved it, we stayed at karon beach and had a weekend on railey beach which was totally stunning, we have booked for easter 08 to stay at bophut koh samui. i can not comment on samui but i had no problems at all on phuket, or railey, we spent a couple of hours at ao nang and looked to book there next year but it just did not fit with are travel plans. i would recommend thailand all day long and having just come back from egypt I cannot understand why the whole world is not going

I would suggest Le Meridian Beach hotel Patong..Private beach..Huge swimming pools..Kids clubs..Great gym..having been to Samui this year I found it very lay back and not as ';touristy'; as Phuket..Samui I feel is targeted towards the Romantic couples/independant party go-er scene..Because you will be travelling with children I think you will have a broader selection of shopping and activities in Phuket..Overall phuket wins my vote as a family holiday destination..

Where to leave suitcases when trekking?

Any suggestions as to where to leave our suitcases if we go on an overnight trek? Thanks!

Where to leave suitcases when trekking?

You will be able to either leave it at the office of the trekking company or alternatively at the hotel you would be staying at (if checking out most have storage facilities where you can store for 24 hours etc)

Where to leave suitcases when trekking?

Thank you. I am getting a little concerned about petty theft due to the number of postings about missing cameras, money, etc. We are bringing a small laptop with us and I wonder what would be the best way to make sure it is secure when we are away while not offending our Thai hosts. What has your experience been? Thank you.

I didnt take a laptop with me... didnt need the stress... is there a specific reason why you are taking it? There are plenty of internet places around Thailand (I mean EVERYWHERE) including all the hotels/guesthouses. Internet is as cheap as 20 baht an hour... all computers are fast and if you take a USB stick you can download all your photos through an internet cafe computer direct to that.

Otherwise make sure you dont have anything precious on it and insure it. I heard lots of horror stories before leaving about guarding your valuables. I never took any more caution than what I would at home and I never once felt unsafe.

Its up to you if you think that it is really necessary to take a laptop on your holiday but I am sure if you do, it will be fine... I would be more concerned about your bags being %26#39;thrown in a room%26#39; thus damaging a laptop more so than theft.

  • Bangtao and Naithon Accommodation

Just when I thought I found the perfect place to stay in Phuket, a bad news broke out from Bangtao Lagoon Bungalow that they only accept 5 nights minimum booking in Feb%26#39;08!! I only want a place to stay for two nights, done the research and found that Bangtao and Naithon beaches are the two best beaches in Phuket. All I look for is just a budget free-standing bungalow type which is close to the beach. Any other recommendation? I look at Andaman Bangtao Bay Resort but the price in Feb seems to be quite on the highest end for me.

    Bangtao and Naithon Accommodation

You might try Bang Tao Beach Chalet:

phuketgoldcoast.com/Bangtao_Beach_Chalet.htm - but not right on the beach - maybe 100 meters away.

Also - Nathon Beach Resort: Not exactly bunglows as as close to beach front as you can get in Naithon - and modestly priced.

    Bangtao and Naithon Accommodation

    Tedkarma,

thanks for your reply. I somehow know you are gonna be the one who can help me!! Anyway, does Naithon Resort have street in the front?

Everything in Naithon is across the street from the beach - there is no accommodation right on the beach. However, that road in that area is not heavily trafficked.

Personally . . . I think it would be hard to beat the Andaman BangTao Bay Resort.

Bungalows right on the beach are becoming quite rare on Phuket as land becomes much more valuable and expensive - much easier to find absolute beachfront bungalows in Khao Lak these days - and that is probably where most people go who seek the quieter atmosphere of Phuket 10-15 years ago.

See www.KhaoLakLovers.com for info on that area.

Movenpick Hotel - Karon Beach ,Phuket- WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT

    Hi to all,

We recently ( July) travelled to lovely, warm friendly Phuket and had a terrific time as a family. We stayed in various places and one of them was the Movenpick in Karon Beach. We read all terrific things about it so we booked it for 5 nights.

We were very disappointed. It is a very very large hotel, on 53 or more acres and it was really spread out, so to walk to the breakfast or the pool it was a 7 minute walk and you could easily get lost, so most of the time it took 12 minutes or more. The food was very good, the service in 2 restaurants was very slow.

We had interconnecting rooms and 1 room had airconditioning problems and we asked for another room, only to be told they were fully booked and it wasn%26#39;t possible. So no reduction on the room that had the problem. There were a few more things that weren%26#39;t good, both with us and another man and the staff were trained in a way that was very curt, and not friendly and not accommodating to the guest. There are so many hotels to choose from, I would recommend staying elsewhere.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn and it was fantastic in all ways and location was brilliant. Yes, it%26#39;s in Patong in a very busy area, but once inside the resort, you could have been anywhere, it was peaceful and had beautiful pools that had warm water so I was even able to swim. It was very relaxing and so easily reached after some shopping, you could walk everywhere even to local restaurants and didn%26#39;t have to bother about other transport. It was relaxing and had wonderful markets at the back of the hotel.

Markets open 6pm - 11pm every night. We bought lots of DVD%26#39;s from the Hello Kitty shop ( it%26#39;s all pink, you can%26#39;t miss it and it%26#39;s at the main entrance to the markets) most of the dvd%26#39;s worked, well we bought 80 and only 3 didn%26#39;t work, not bad and they had a very good selection. They are all 60 baht ( approx. $2.50 each australian)

There were many other items to buy at these markets, lots of Quick Silver t-shirts and surfing boardies for men and boys, they were great quality and lots of things for kids and teenagers, not so much clothing for women.

anyway, if anyone wants some handy tips or more info, I%26#39;m happy to reply back.

We also stayed at Phi Phi Island at the Holiday Inn, it was good, but the Phi Phi Island HOliday resort which is being renovated now, would be a better choice. The bungalows are more traditional and the grounds nicer.

Oh, important news if you are travelling to Phi Phi Island from Phuket. There is a private air shuttle plane that can take you in approx 20 minutes instead of 3 1/2 hours on a ferry . It costs aprox. AUD $75.00 one way per person. It was worth every cent, because I get sea sick and the ocean was rough on the way over and I was very sick, so going back not only did I save a lot of valuable time, but I wasn%26#39;t sick and it was exciting. The ocean apparently is very rough in June, July, Aug and Sept, but gets a lot calmer other months of the year.

The details of the air shuttle are: Destination Air

    www.destinationair.com or email booking@destinationair.com

    or phone +66 76 328 638

    very worthwhile,

    Bye for now

Movenpick Hotel - Karon Beach ,Phuket- WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT

Sorry to read that your stay at the Movenpick was a disapointing experience for you.. Having been to both the Holiday Inn (Patong) and the Movenpick (Karon).. I can only say that I%26#39;m very surpriced that your complaint wasn%26#39;t handled in a more satisfactory manner. This was not our experience during a very recent stay. However it is an older resort.. as the very good pricing for a great resort does reflect. Nevertheless problems oughts to have been fixed and/or an upgrade offered.

in phuket 0n 19th august for 10 days

hi we are a couple from uk,first time in phuket staying at the le meridian.Any tips on where to go/not to go for nightlife?,any other couples out there same time?

in phuket 0n 19th august for 10 days

Hi my husband %26amp; I just came from phuket last month. I totaly have no idea where your hotel is located but if its in the Patong beach strip I suggest you go to Bang La road for nightlife. You%26#39;ll get to see bars and bars open till early morning.Very entertaining. However if you want to stay in the more family-oriented side of Phuket I suggest you stick to the Patong strip and enjoy the bands offered by some hotels and bars there. However expect most of these establishments on the strip to close by midnight.Have a great vacation.

in phuket 0n 19th august for 10 days

Hi mtkho, thanks will try both areas.Only 5 days to go now and can%26#39;t wait to get there!.

Cost of trip from Airport to Patong Merlin Hotel

Cost of trip from Airport to Patong Merlin Hotel

hi there my husband %26amp; i stayed at patong merlin just last July 24-29.Although all our airport transfers were arranged by our travel agent guess what, out of curiosity we did ask a local taxi stand right at the entrance of Patong merlin. They charge 600bhatt for one way to the airport. So I guess its the same way around. Estimated time 50minutes. Personally I find this very expensive (they overcharge to give allowance to haggling). For 50mins of travel I would pegg it at 250bhat. However the front desk staff at patong merlin are very helpfull, I suggest you call them to help u with your airport transfers. I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;ll find the best way for you to get you from airport w/out costing u a mint. Enjoy ur vacation.

Cost of trip from Airport to Patong Merlin Hotel

oh I just read a message from dcrv. She wrote a detailed experience on her trip to phuket. She wrote that taxis (tuk tuks) charged her 800bhatt. I suggest you read her message. Again enjoy ur vacation %26amp; hope I was of help.

Thankyou so much for your info.

I hope the Patong Merlin is a nice place...we paid for it today...so catn wait till November!!!

    Any Tips for our stay???

I would pay no more than 500 baht. We hired a driver for the day that took us around all of Phuket for that much so i don%26#39;t see how a 50 min drive should be more.

Patong merlin do a really good evening buffet. Different food each night including sea food, western, BBQ all with live music and the bar next to where you eat called the sunset bar have happy hour 16:30 - 19:30 and if you drink there you get 10% off the buffet. When we was there just over a week ago the buffet cost 490 baht all you can eat including salad and deserts.

Check out my holiday review for more info on things to do.

You will have a wicked time

that%26#39;s right. u get 10% discounts on food %26amp; 20% discounts on massages. Dinner buffets are great with live music every night. The hallways leading to your room will be a bit dim but surprisingly it opens up to a very nice room w/ balcony overlooking the pool. Make sure u get that side of the hotel. Anyway try going to the ff:

The Port - 5min walk frm merlin - live band every night

Irish Pub - 5-6min walk frm merlin- great food big servings

Sabay Sabay - 3 min walk ask for directions - authentic thai food

    and very affordable

Bang La Road - 15min walk - For you nightlife that will surely keep

you awake till morning, very entertaining. get there

way before 10pm so u get beers at 50bhatt only.

have a great vacation I%26#39;m excited for you already.

    Hi There,

Catch a metre taxi from the airport - go out of the terminal and turn right - it will cost you about 450THB which includes the airport fee. This is cheaper than taking a driver that approaches you as soon as you come out of customs.

    Cheers,

    Sandy

thankyou so mych for all your info.

    I absolutely love Trip advisor!!!!

We are at the Patong Merlin from 28th Nov-12 Dec.

    Anyone else there then??

  • Do Thai ATM's use 4 or 6 digit pins?

Does anyone know which banks are most amenable to Canadian ATM cards and do they use 4 or 6 digit pins? Thank you!

Do Thai ATM's use 4 or 6 digit pins?

I have several U.S. debit and credit cards, all of mine work with 4 digits in Thailand.

My cards work in Canada with no problem too!

If you intend to use a credit card in an ATM remember that some cards have high ATM fees. In Thailand there are ATM%26#39;s all over the place including at the airport. Take out the maximum you can to cut down on lots of fees for small withdrawals. You can change your Thai baht back to dollars at the airport when you leave.

Make sure you tell your bank that you will be overseas and where, otherwise they may think someone else is using your card! Take more than one card, if you take only a single card it could become stolen, lost or mutilated and you would be out $$$.

    Have fun
