We are ferrying back to Phuket from Koh Samui 鈥?how long would it take to drive from where the ferry stops down to Kata beach?

Assuming that you are arriving at Phuket town from somewhere (other than samui):-)... taxi to Kata would take about 20 minutes to half an hour... cost something like 500 Baht..

P.S. you may be able to buy a ticket (tour) which includes ferry ride and transfet to your Phuket hotel.

Ok so I made a bit of a mistake there - we will ferry into Surat Thani then want to make our way over to Phuket to go down to Koh Lanta.

Apparently by bus this would take around 8 hours - what would you expect to make it in driving? Or would the best option be simply to fly directly into Phuket?

You can fly.. not a cheap flight though. Bangkonk air do fly Samui to Phuket.

By road from SuratThani to Patong/Kata would be less than 8 hours.. but more than 5. Road is very good.

You could take the bus to Krabi/AoNang... and ferry to Koh Lanta/Koh Phi Phi and from the to Phuket town....

All options are open (during high season)... really depends on what you want to do/see and how much time/money you want to throw at it.

I drive quite often from Surat Thani to Rawai (Phuket), normally in the middle of the night, and it takes me about 3 hours. It is a scenic route, so during the day with a few stops, count on 5-6 hours.
