Is this something we can do in Chiang Mai, possibly at one of the markets? Any idea on the approximate cost of this? Thanks!
having a silk blouse custom tailored?
I hope I%26#39;m not too late in replying, but you don%26#39;t want to have this done at any of the markets. I buy silk by the metre from Praephun Thaisilk, 83-85 Thapae Rd (by Mae-Kha Bridge) and he advertises making by order. Unfortunately I don%26#39;t know the cost or the quality of the workmanship. Further down the road, near the Thaepae Gate there is a big shop that I%26#39;m sure would do this, also a shop called City Silk who has a good reputation. My husband has hidden my Lonely Planet guide so I can%26#39;t give you their address. Be careful, a lot of stuff advertised as Thai silk is actually polyester. The best way to test is the burn test. Take a lighter with you, ask for a thread from the bolt of fabric and set fire to it. If the fabric is silk then the ash will be soft and crumbly, polyester leaves a hard blob when burned. If they won%26#39;t let you do this then you%26#39;re looking at polyester, anyone selling genuine silk will know that you know the difference and be only too happy to let you test it. I was in a huge place in Bangkok a couple of years ago looking for silk by the metre. They showed me bolts and bolts of fabric, all ';genuine silk.'; I pulled out my lighter and was immediately taken to another part of the shop where the silk was genuine. Needless to say, I didn%26#39;t buy from there. HTH.
