My daughter is in Hosp. No JBR for a while from me.........

Hi Guys,

Just a quick note just to let you all know that I have not been lazy in posting my JBR, but that the very next day I had to take my eldest (7yrs) to Hospital and I have just gotten back home tonight. She is still there and will be so for the next week

Both my hubby %26amp; I are doing a %26#39;Tag-Team'; system as I have not slept at home for 2 nights.

She had sever apendicitis (sp?) which had ruptured and it was very nasty according to the surgeon.

It truly is a miracle that it happened the very next day after our return from LOS.

She has endured a lot of pain, my little %26#39;Blossom%26#39; but she is a fighter.

So as you can imagine, I am jet-lagged, tired %26amp; very emotional at the moment. JBR is the last thing on my mind.

Cheers %26amp; Happy travels to all.

  • Recommend a tour operator to Ang Thong Marine Park

Can anyone recommend a tour operator to Ang Thng?

I%26#39;m traveling with wife and Baby.. I prefer speed boat, is that possible with a baby?

I want to have stop on the main Island with the beautiful viewpoint, as well as on the island with the lake.

Any help grealy appreciated. Also if you can advise what you paid and if it%26#39;s cheaper to prebook or just book once there.

    This is for Aug 13-17.

    thanks

Recommend a tour operator to Ang Thong Marine Park

Lomprayah look pretty good. I was going to book this one myself for the week after yourself, and you get a discount for booking online.

We were warned against the speedboat las time in Samui, and that may influence you if travelling with a child?

Anyone else have know anything about Lomprayah?

Recommend a tour operator to Ang Thong Marine Park

There are a few to chose from, speed boat is the way forward as its so much quicker. I%26#39;m not sure taking a baby though will be ideal as the ride can be VERY choppy.

I cant remember the name of the operator i went with (i%26#39;m sure it had %26#39;blue%26#39; in the name - i%26#39;ll find out tonight) but they all seemed pretty much the same. Most visit the lake, have time for snorkelling and swimming and you either have a choice to go canoeing or going to the viewpoint.

We visited the Marine Park with Blue star Kayak and it was amazing. The boat was a big boat and you had a chance to go Kayaking in 2 locations. So if taking a baby you and hubby could swap. The emerald lake within the park is a bit difficult to get to with lots of steep stairs to climb not sure I would take a baby up there ( i certainly wouldnt be able to carry her/him.) But it was a wonderful experience and my husband and I had a great day.

No dont prebook when you get to Samui there are plenty of tour operators and you will be able to choose yourselves to find the best one for you and your needs.

    Hope this helps

    Glennie

We went with Lomprayah and had a great time. Save $$ if you book online. It might be a tough go with a baby.

Can you please explain, why is it a tough go with a baby? is there no private time to allow him to crawl? can we just relax on the beaches instead of running around frantically?

    Thanks

we went to the marine park on a big boat owned by our resort, it took an hour or so and they provided drinks refreshments etc it was a lovely relaxing journey, with loads of rooms and seating but transferring a baby on to a fishing boat to get to the island would be worrying and then back again. it was really choppy when we left to get back to the boat and it was extremely difficult to get in the fishing boat and i had no children to take care of only myself, my bag, towel and everything ended up in the water, it got rough because a rain storm was coming in.

the island with the lake was breath taking but it was a very long hard climb up very primitive wooden steps the get to the top of the island, it was a dry hot day when we went and it was crowded and took ages its very diffucult and only should be done by able fit people. my dad couldnt even contemplate attempting it and hes fit but with a bad hip, the steps are a very high stretch apart. if it was wet i would not have considered even trying it. and i%26#39;m only early 40%26#39;s

the next day i ached all over, it was like a work out. i dont want to put you off but its only fair you know exactly what to expect. the other island was lovely, with a very primitive cafe and toilet, nothing else, the sand was gorgeous like flour, the tide came is extremely fast and i got stuck in some quick sand, there was quite a lot of debris on the beach including glass. and there was the same issue of transferring from the boat to the fishing boat. My next visit to Samui we took a speed boat to Koh Phangan, and i couldnt beleive how many people they packed on the boat, it was a bit dodgy getting from the beach into the boat, at Phangan we had a ten foot climb out of the boat onto the harbour wall, we stayed a few hours and on returning to the boat the tide had gone out a bit and the boat was another 5 feet lower that when we arrived, i was terrified trying to get in the boat. hope i have not spoiled your plans but personally knowing what i know i would not go with a baby

    regards

    tracey

thanks a lot for the info. very helpful... do you think it would be the same with all tour operators? do they all use the fishing boats? I was under the impression that lomproya or whatever it%26#39;s called takes you everywhere themselves....

    thanks again

hi there had a look at Lomprayah, not heard of it before but it looks like a very professonal operation, you would still have to transfer to the beach on a smaller boat as there is no jetty or anything, please bear in mind health and safety is very basic compared to some other countries,,,might be wise to contact them. http://www.lomprayah.com/E/route.htm

    good luck

    tracey

Tracey said it all!! Enjoyed Lomprayah, but you would have to take turns staying with the baby when you are snokeling. The getting into and out of the boat probably wouldn%26#39;t be a problem. Not much room on the boat. Customers sit on each side of the boat with a narrow walkway. It was a very bumpy, wet ride back to Ko Samui. Also, if the baby isn%26#39;t happy, nobody is happy!!

Have till this monday to decide, I%26#39;m already in Thailand...

Lomproya sounds great, but if it%26#39;s a small boat, that could be a problem for him... So far he loved the elephants and bamboo rafting, but sitting in one place for close to two hours without being able to move might be rough.

anyone recommend any bigger boats that are decent?

Health Care in Bangkok & Phuket

    Hi all,

me and my wife are arriving at Bangkok next August 16th for 2 weeks. We are planning to stay 5 nights or so in bangkok and then moving to phuket for 8 days and then return back to bangkok to catch up the flight to europe.

We are ot planning to do any jungle trips. Shopping, some monuments and beach holidays are our aim.

I just can%26#39;t stop reading all precautions one should have about several diseases.

Can anyone give an opinion of what is the actual risk of contamination of:

    -Yellow fever

    -Dengue Fever

    -Malaria

    -Bird Flu

    -etc

Can you also please advice your best tips to avoid being bited by mosquitoes or to avoid any health problems.

    Thanks in advance

Health Care in Bangkok %26amp; Phuket

    The usual precautions.

If you avoid stupidity, you will be fine. Wear long sleeves and long trousers if you are worried about dengue and malaria (but in bangkok and Phuket the riskis very low anyway).

Bird flu? If you do not work on a chicken farm you probably risk nothing.

The best place to check is Lonely Planet.

    Cheapest Bars in Phuket?

    Hi Guys,

My partner and I and another couple are coming up in a couple of weeks and the men have challenged each other to who can find the cheapest bars/drinks around.

I found last time we were over that the market bars (the circle bars) accross the road from the Patong Merlin were good prices. Well my other half though so whilst I was shopping :).

What are your recommendations? We are staying just out of Patong.

    Cheapest Bars in Phuket?

Ah come on guys... Any takers

    Cheapest Bars in Phuket?

I have heard by a reliable person that the Bar on the Sakai has cheap drinks!!

The Quoka bar at Patong O Top markets is also pretty good.

There are so many and if you get out of town a little you will find some very cheap ones.

    Cheers, Pete.

    Hi,

To be honest, I did not really take much notice. I stayed at the Patong Merlin last april and visited a few places after the golf and the circle bars were as cheap as any i believe.

Food and drink in Phuket can be so cheap that I hardly give it much thought. Golf on the other hand is quite expensive and the drinks at the awesome club houses are very much higher than patong, naturally but it is very nice. It is good to spoil yourself, every now and then.

I would take a guess that the bars in Karon etc would be slighty cheaper than Patong Beach where most of the action is.

    Anyway, have a great time..

    Niko

    Moevenpick Phuket

    Hey Guys

We are travelling to Moevenpick in October and I sent them an email to ask if thye seems to have much a a mosquito problem there or if the provide nets/coils etc.

They replied and said';We do have a mosquito killer service in the room and also our housekeeper will be attending all our guest room';. Does anyone know what they mean by this? :-)

    Cheers

    Moevenpick Phuket

Guess they are telling you that if you see a mosquito and call room service, they will attend to it right away.. and that they, as part of the room service, will spray for insects?

What I can tell you is that the resort is really nice.. Its an older resort.. perhaps from the mid 80%26#39;s... But in very good condition, splendid gardens and well run with nice people looking after you. Right from the rception staff, the house keeping, restaurants, gardeners etc.

If your room is the ';ocean view';.. bear in mind that the ocean is a fair way away.. you do see it.. but its not really close.. The villas are nice.. especially the plunge and pool ones... We were there (plunge pool villa)...for a few days around Easter time.. and I don%26#39;t remember seeing mosquitos.... Enjoy and don%26#39;t worry... you%26#39;ll be looked after!

    Moevenpick Phuket

Can someone explain to me what a plunge pool is? I see them on the hotel pics but I can%26#39;t figure out if it%26#39;s just a smaller ';pool'; in the room?

To my way of thinking its a pretty useless, very small pool... In the case of the Movenpick they are outside on a terrace. They do have jets in them like in a spa.. But they are really just a small pool.. Nice enough to sit in a sip a glass of wine. A gimmick if you ask me. However the rooms are supurb... Very large and really well furnished... and the service is 5*.... The pool.. well. take it or leave it...

The upstairs villas have larger pools...

    Hello,

You certainly wont need a mosquito net in such a nice hotel and I would not recomend coils in teh room. But with the air conditioner on then you wont have a problem YOu might want some coils for your terrrace but you can busy those at any shot for about 50 pence.

Its the tropics and there is no way to completely avoid mosquitos but they are generally only aggressive from about 4pm to 6pm.

    Hi,

Dont worry you wont have a problem with Mosquitos in the hotel, we stayed here before my favorite Hotel in Phuket it%26#39;s lovely.

    Julie

    Marriott Bangkok Resort & Spa

Staying here for 5 nights at the end of December in a Junior Suite.

Does anyone know what time the shuttle boat runs till ?My wife likes to shop at Patpong Night Market is it far away ? Are there problems getting a Taxi late at night ?Are the Junior Suites like the internet pics ?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Marriott Bangkok Resort %26amp; Spa

    Hi,

Great Hotel you wont be dissappointed, I think the shuttel runs till at the earliest Midnight may be later, and early morning there is two and they go back and forth to the skytrain all day it takes about 10m mins but very nice and relaxing and they give you water and cold towel on your return journey, we stayed in a standard room and it was very nice just like the picture. You get the skytrain to Patpong night Market it%26#39;s not far.

    Julie

    Marriott Bangkok Resort %26amp; Spa

First river shuttle is 6.45am then every 15 minutes until last one at Midnight. Get off on the other side and catch the Sky Train to Patpong on Silom Road. Depending on connections, and Sky Train runs frequently also, about 30 minutes from the Marriott to Patpong.

Be careful with taxdis returning at night. We caught one from the Marriott to Suan Lum Night Market which cost 80 baht on the meter. Returning at about 10.30pm we couldn%26#39;t get one to go on the meter and had to settle for 200 baht when most wanted at least 300.

We had a Junior Suite and it was great, and we booked with breakfast and access to the Club Lounge for cocktails, beer, champers (anything you wanted) and a tasters from the various restaurants in the hotel from 4pm to 8pm every night. A very nice way to start an evening.

The hotel also offers a riverside BBQ and Thai dance show for 1500baht which was great value and an excellent Dinner Cruise on one of its converted rice barges. Also 1500 baht and excellent.

    Area to stay in.

Hello, 40 year old female travelling alone will be in Bangkok for 5 days. I am not into bars or clubs or shopping in shopping centres. interested day trips and markets and just relaxing on stopover.

Probably will not even go out at night. Which area should I be looking in for a 4 star hotel to stay in. Thanks

    Area to stay in.

My husband and I are in your age group and are not into bars, clubs nor too much shopping malls either. During our trip to Thailand in June, our Bangkok stop-over was spent at the Old Bangkok Inn. I know that this is not a 4 star hotel as such but it definitely is comparable to it (minus the pool). The feel of this boutique hotel is very warm, personal though not imposing. The location, in old bangkok,is perfect for cultural visits, just a 35 baht cab ride away to The Grand Palace. Other historically important temples are at a comfortable walking distance away. And as far as food goes, you will be recommended to eateries where only locals will go, or if you prefer you can order in. But if you ever feel the need to venture into the shopping district or visit the Jim Thompson%26#39;s home then you can catch the canal boat at the pier across the main avenue ; it is very cheap and probably the best way to beat Bangkok congested traffic.

We found this little establishment to be perfect for us. It also seems very safe for lady travellers (many guests are women ), most of the staff, and the ever so sweet and helpful owner, are also female. IMO, this seems to be an option for you to possibly contemplate on.

They rank number 1 on tripadvisor%26#39;s Bangkok B%26amp;Bs.

    Bon voyage!

    Area to stay in.

Hi,I recommend ChinaTown Area, not far from Grand Palace ,Wat Phra Keow,Wat Po,Wat Arun and there are many maze of shops.

I agree Grand China Princess, situated in the middle of Chinatown. It is very close to major tourist attractions, such as the Royal Grand Palace. And they have Club Lounge overlooking the panoramic view of the City and the Chao Phraya River.Maybe suitable for your relaxtion.

How about the Asia Hotel? It is in a mostly bar free area AND you have the advantage of being right at a Skytrain stop! This hotel is not far from Phetchaburi Road where there are lots of street vendors, restaurants, Panthip Plaza electronics mall, a mini garment center near the Baiyoke Tower Hotel and several other malls.

Another Hotel you can check out is the First Hotel, 2 Phetchaburi Road. This hotel is not far from the Asia Hotel (nearest Skytrain stop) and relatively bar free! Same vendors available as above paragraph. First Hotel has some decent rooms at good prices.

Having a hotel near the Skytrain is an advantage. You can use the cheap and fast Skytrain to take you to many popular areas in Bangkok.

There is no reason to be afraid of hotels in the Sukhumvit area, with or without bars around. No one forces you into a bar at gunpoint! Thousands of tourist pass these bars every day without any problems! Do visit Sukhumvit Road and check out the street vendors, etc.

Have a good time in Bangkok.

Have just spent several days at the Phranakorn-Nornlen Hotel. It%26#39;s situated in Old Bangkok, away from most tourists but still close to anything and everything. It%26#39;s near Thewet Pier from where you can hop on the fantastic river taxis to go almost anywhere.

There were several lone travellers when we were there. Just read the reviews on this site, I think it will suit you down to the ground. It is such a relaxing spot to return to after a hot day in the city. It really is an authentic Thai experience and the staff are disarmingly friendly.

I%26#39;ve been to Bangkok five times now, and this is the only place I%26#39;d stay. Do have a good trip. Let me know how it goes.

    Hello :

People has a prejudge on Sukhumvit hotels and all they

think are the other tourists stay in Sukhumvit road .

I have seen all type of tourist frequently staying this area.

You can have a lower or upper Suk. hotels. The bars and

clubs are not everywhere and really hard for you to find

If you are not looking for them . That is true , Nobody will force

you to do anything if you don%26#39;t like . This a free enterprise economy

system . I was there in May, 2007 and very pleased with this

Sukhumvit , particulary the Majestic suites hotel.

For a good measure of more great things in Bangkok ; I shall

be back the same hotel and spend more holidays time later

    this year.

    Enjoy your trip,

    Hi,

I would take a look at the Marriott Resort and Spa. Fantastic place for relaxing, the pool area is gorgeous.

It has several restaurants, chinese, japanese, seafood, thai cuisine so would be perfect if you didn%26#39;t want to leave the hotel at night.

It%26#39;s right on the river away from the hustle and bustle but still easily accessible.

    Sarah

I’m with Infidelal and Trat. The bars on Sukhumvit are hard to see if you don’t look for them. You don’t go out at night when “girls” start to walk so you can’t see anything.

This hotel is close to Phrom Phong skytrain station which is convenient for your day trips or market visits. I paid 3,900 Baht (US$118) but you may get a better deal. I find it relaxing to sit in the small park next to the hotel in the morning. I have my review and photos here:

    Hello :

I paid 1350baht a day in the Majestic suites on Sukhumvit

road. The booking was very easy through their own web

site. This hotel is located between soi 4 and Landmark hotel,

a short walk to Nana station and very close to everything on

the lower Sukhumvit restaurants, internet cafes, laundry mats,

You name it they have it here. I stayed here in May, 2007

and can not wait to Rush back this area and Bangkok.

    Enjoy the trip,

Yes, Majestic Suites is nice, and guests can use the swimming pool at the Majestic Grande (on Soi 2).

You might be a little, err, %26#39;upset%26#39; to meet temporary couples in the morning, in the lift. That%26#39;s because the Number 1 bars place is just around the corner (in fact the rooms at the back of the hotel overlook the place).

    Have fun!

    Hello :

I definitely have not any problem with Temp. couple in the lift

at the Majestic suites at a bit. For a number of Bars around

the corner, it is sometimes a Big advantage to visit and have

some Entertainments that they can offer.

Bars and clubs are everywhere in the USA and through out EU.

and who%26#39;s having any problem with that ?

After all, We can use Freedom of Speech in Thailand too.

He sold me the syringes with the whitening agent. I don%26#39;t see what the danger is - worst case scenario? Confiscation?

I then bought a coupl more the following year.

    Easiest? Check with your customs!

Can you take home a ';Take Home Teeth Whitening Kit';? AUS

Hi - I brought some home to NZ for my wife a couple of months ago. No problem. You must have a professionally-made mould however, otherwise the strength of the product means that gum disease can occur. If you already have a custom-fitted mould, you should be sweet. Remember that the product is supposed to be kept refrigerated. So buy your product just before you leave Thailand. Any dentist in BKK etc can supply, I%26#39;m sure. I used www.asavanant.com. Best of luck .....

Mosquito repellent, 100% deet or not. And sunscreen....

Just bought a repellent here in the US to bring along with me to Thailand.

I got 100% Deet for me wife and 1yr old child. Now I%26#39;m told that might be bad and way to strong can anyone comment?

Also, what is recommended if I want sun protection and mosquito protection can I just apply both or will one kill the other? is the mosquito problem worse by day or night?

We%26#39;ll be visiting Chiang Mai and the area as well as samui and phuket.

    Thanks in advance, Dan

Mosquito repellent, 100% deet or not. And sunscreen....

    Hi Dan,

I%26#39;ve used 80% deet in Thailand and although its very effective I wouldn%26#39;t use it again, it actually feels like your skins burning when its on. Last year I used 30% and found it just as effective and it didn%26#39;t burn. I wouldn%26#39;t put 100% on a one year old and infact would ask a pharmacist what strength is suitable for a child.

The last 2 years we were in Chiang Mai and Samui I found the mozzies more rife in Samui especially around dusk. We did a 4 day hill tribe treck through the jungle areas of Chiang Mai and found the leeches more bothersome however, once again they are far worse at dusk.

    Hope this helps.

Mosquito repellent, 100% deet or not. And sunscreen....

Hi Chaimdan, what I have done I purchased a 90% DEET for my upcoming trip to cambodia. As this thign is really toxic you have to test it before your trip. Last saturday we had a day off so decided to spray ourselves and see how we react to it. I didnt mind 90% but my girlfriend decided it was a bit too much as her skin is more sensitive.

Also remember that with such high humidity you will be sweaty most of the time - it is very possible it might actually make things even worse.

So give it a try before your trip and if you see any side effects get yourself a lower % repellant.

    Thanks a lot guys...

How do you mix these with sunscreen? do most of you just stick to sunscreen during the day or do you just mix? or is there a recommended combo with deet?

    thanks again

I don%26#39;t bother with the mozzie repellant during the day especially if I%26#39;m swimming or out in the ocean etc, I find sunscreen fine during the day you can also buy 30+ sunscreen that has insect repellant in it as well. I would however apply deet during the day if I were going through rainforests and places like that.

When you perspire (as you will with the humidity) large concentrations of deet can actually block the pores of your skin making you very uncomfortable. 30% will be efficient.

    Regards

    Coffs

It%26#39;s likely too strong for a 1 year old. 30% seems to be the consensus for babies over 2 months of age. Apply sunscreen first, then the DEET.

    Wow,

100% deet..That%26#39;s way too much in my opinion. I can believe when poeple say that it burns.

I use a product with 25-30% deet and it is very effective. I play a lot of golf which can be in prime mozzie country with water holes, trees etc etc.

If in doubt, check with your doctor.

    Have a great holiday

    Niko

First, I am not an expert on DEET or insect repellents and do not offer any opinions or recommendations. Everyone should do their own research from a variety of accredited sources and not rely on information from others especially me.

A few of the many things to be aware of when using DEET:

After returning indoors it is important to remove DEET by washing areas to which it was applied. Wash clothing which has been exposed to DEET before wearing again.

Do not apply to or under clothing.

Avoid nasal membranes, eyes and mouth, use it sparingly around ears and do not apply repellent to children%26#39;s hands.

Keep containers out of reach of children. Ingesting relatively small amounts can be fatal.

    From what I have read, there is little additional protection provided by concentrations of DEET above 30%. Higher concentrations just increase the length of time that one application is effective. ';The ';effective'; time increases as you increase the concentration of DEET.';

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a maximum concentration for children of 30% and that DEET be applied to children no more than once a day. Products with concentrations around 10% are effective for about 90 minutes to two hours. A concentration of 25% provide an average time of effectiveness of at least 5 hours.

Reports of toxic effects from DEET appear to be infrequent especially at concentrations below 50% when not used for prolonged periods and used according to all directions.

    [from deetonline.org]

';Can I use a DEET-based insect repellent and sunscreen together?

    The effectiveness of both insect repellents and sunscreens are dramatically reduced when users apply them at the same time. Decide which is your top priority at the moment-protection from insects or from the sun-then apply either a repellent or sunscreen, plus use other measures to reduce insect and sun exposure. Some manufacturers produce a specially formulated product that combines both DEET-based insect repellent and sunscreen. These should be used with the frequency of [DEET] repellents, where you re-apply only as needed to exposed skin areas.';

A few peer reviewed studies have indicated that soybean oil repellents provide protection equal to or better than DEET products but must be re-applied every 90 minutes. Versions of these products are available that contain sunscreen and can be reapplied as often as desired. One product that combines soybean oil with other natural oils indicated 97% protection for 3 hours in studies by one university and equal to a 15% DEET product in a USDA study.

A few examples of types of information available on this subject:

    faculty.washington.edu/chudler/deet.html

    epa.gov/oppsrrd1/REDs/factsheets/0002fact.pdf

    www.cdc.gov/travel

As everyone else has said 30% is more than enough.... your child should not be anywhere near something as strong as 100% (nor should you)... it is very toxic...

I would wear it during the day as it is the daytime mossies that carry dengue fever.... prevention better than the cure!

Check with a pharmacist or doctor re your 1yo, as 30% may not be suitable....

    Hi Dan!

We went to Phuket back in April and i took with me ';Mozzie Patches'; that i purchased online at www.nomoremozzies.com ... they were terrific, they last 36 hrs and totally safe! I used them on my hubby and I and our 3 girls. No-one got bitten and no-one had any reactions to them. Perfect!

    - Sam :-)

I would recommend Citronella oil to keep mossies and other insects at bay, they absolutely hate it and it%26#39;s completely safe for all the family to use. Found out about this on a trip in Sri Lanka and I%26#39;ve never had anything work better, it%26#39;s like magic. Also, if you pour some in a container and leave open in your room you%26#39;ll find it insect free. Can be brought over the internet or most herbal shops should sell it.

Oh and it doesn%26#39;t smell bad either, kind of a lemony aroma to it but not overpowering

  • Golden Triangle Thailand Hotels

Are there any lux hotels in the triangle other than the 4 seasons tented camp?

    Golden Triangle Thailand Hotels

Are you aware that the Golden Triangle is about an hour drive north of Chiang Rai? We didn%26#39;t know that and thought we were staying in Chiang Rai, but when we got to our hotel at the Golden Triangle we loved the place! We stayed at the Imperial Golden Triangle there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Golden Triangle Thailand Hotels

I too also like the %26#39;Imperial Golden Triangle Resort%26#39;. All rooms look out to the golden triangle and have a balcony. The resort is walking distance to everything.

Anantara looks like the only other luxury hotel there.

...Its a beutyfull hotel the golden triangle resort..As you go through the front doors the vast ness of this lux hotel is stunning..As you walk over to the dinning room the vieu from it all is out standing on the patio out side the dinning room...Chris

The Imperial Golden Triangle is on one side of the highway and the Anantara is on the other.

We used to stay at Baan Boran before it was the Ananatara. It was not well maintained back then. Just after that they built the Golden Triangle Resort so we stayed there, which was much better. Then Baan Boran was bought out by Anantara and completely redone.

Ning and I went there about 6 months ago to take a look at Anantara and compare it to the Golden Triangle Resort. WOW what a make over.

Anantra is now our choice at the Golden triangle. Very serene, laid back, excellent service with true luxury at an affordable price. Ning spent hours at the Spa while I spent time with the elephants. They also have a wonder resort in Hua Hin and on Samui.

    Pamper yourself,

    Randy and Ning

Check out the Anatara review we wrote back in...I think it was November 2007. ej54. We loved the place.

Whoops, Somehow the post read 2007 but actually it was 2006!

Hi Sue, it was good to see you guys again. I was thinking about your mum, dad and Colin earlier. If Pom didn%26#39;t tell them the rules about Jatukam, let me know, I%26#39;ll fill you in.

    Hi Sue

    Deb XX

    Hi Guys,

Deb, glad you all got home safely, it was really good to meet you all, we had a blast! How was our pub crawl on Wednesday night on Soi Bangla. We have not been to sleep since 8am Friday morning, we are exhausted and sooo cold. Hoping to get started on my jbr, but Im still in lethargic mode and in need of sleep.

Colin actually had to get in the car to drive 8 kms for take out, he wasnt impressed lol, think he%26#39;s having Singha and Chang withdrawals.

Tina, Pom did explain to us in Thai version but would love to know the english version, ta. Sue

    Hi Sue

Its always awful those first few days home, I have got on the forum just so I can still feel like I am holiday. You need to share it and talk about it otherwise its to easily forgotten. Hope to start my JBR later

I have some great photos so will get them posted as well,

Tours to Anthong Marine Park from Koh Phangan???

Does anybody know if there are any daytrips to Anthong Marine Park from Koh Pangan???? They all seem to operate out of Koh Samui.

Tours to Anthong Marine Park from Koh Phangan???

    Hi Jay,

The only place that seems to run a direct trip to Ang Thong is the Dive Inn. We booked through a lady in Thong Sala called Jeab at Asia Travel Centre I think from memory. Contact jeabsia@hotmail.com Tel 077-238607 Mob 0841882121

You could ask around elsewhere, but all other trips seem to go via Samui.... I checked almost every travel agent on the strip!

The day was 1000 baht and included breakfast and lunch and a great crew. Unfortunately the weather turned bad for us and the day was a bit of a nightmare BUT the crew were professional and fantastic. They really looked after us!

Our day is here : travelblog.org/Asia/鈥log-111288.html

The Dive Inn can probably be booked direct... maybe google them. They are mainly a dive operator but do this snorkelling trip too.

Tours to Anthong Marine Park from Koh Phangan???

Here is their website : http://www.the-diveinn.com/index.html

It doesnt seem to mention the snorkelling day trip but just email them and ask. We did it in December so pretty sure they are still doing it!

Thanks so much for your prompt rely

I enjoyed reading your blog- Thailand is always an adventure...I think that%26#39;s what is half the fun.

    thanks for the tips

I think we will take a kayakingand snorkling trip from Samui- the caves just look awesome, almost blue grotto like!

    http://www.bluestars.info/

(for anyone else%26#39;s info) looks like a well equiped company

I%26#39;m just trying to go from Phangan as we are staying there a while in a average place and we are only in Samui for 3 days and we have splurged on a nice resort (Sala Samui) so I%26#39;m trying to maximise my time at the resort rather than spending a whole day out on a trip.

thanks for your assistance-much appreciated...as this is my first time using the forum -bye

    car with driver recommendations?

    hi all,

we are planning to stay in a private villa when we go to samui. as location is going to be remote, we want to book a van with driver for a couple of days. i%26#39;ve been searching for threads on this topic but couldn%26#39;t find any answers with driver%26#39;s contact and prices. can anyone please help?

1)there are going to be 6 of us and we really don%26#39;t want to drive on our own. if anyone has experience with a reliable driver at reasonable cost, please advise.

    2) we would want to go to chaweng for a night or 2. would it be a problem for the driver to pick us up late in chaweng and back to bophut?

    3) has anyone used the website www.samuiholidayhomes.com to book a villa? are they reliable? as it%26#39;s quite a bit of money in advance, if anyone had used them before, please share experience.

thanks everyone for time and sharing. any advice would be appreciated.

    car with driver recommendations?

    Hey Yammy

My friend Diow has a new clean air conditioned mini van which would be ideal for a group of your size. I used to teach him in the peninsula and hes a good reliable lad. he charges about 2500baht for 1 day with gasoline included. Call him direct yourself

    66 (0)898688914

or get back to me and ill arrange something for you

    car with driver recommendations?

thanks footballgolf! thanks a lot for your help! i will check on our budget and will contact your friend directly. it seems like samui cost of transportation is much higher than Hua Hin where we went last year. we hired drivers for 1500baht for the whole day but i guess the standard of living is very much different in different part of thailand.

anyways, thanks very much for your help.

yeh samui has its own economy and is expensive now due to the fact its a relatively small island which is booming. the businesses here have to pay higher rents and so things like shopping and eating out are more expensive than other parts of thailand, for people who live here as well as for the tourists

What should not be missed in Chiang Mai?

    Hi,

We will have about two days in Chiang Mai. What should we make sure to see? We are a couple about 40 years old and not in shape to do any trekking so that is unfortunately out. I know I want to see the night market. Also, are there any wonderful restaurants we should make sure we get to???? Any advice would be great!

    Thanks!

What should not be missed in Chiang Mai?

I would sudjest the white elephan temple..taxi there and back...there is a lift so no probs for you...A day around C/M Zoo...hire a tuk tuk and they will take you around it (so no walking)..or the wonderful garden and lake..(tuk tuk again) so no walking...or take the tuk tuk again and go to the sankhandpan hot water springs take your swim ware with you and wollow in the mineral pool..just to name a few....Chris

What should not be missed in Chiang Mai?

There some pichures of a few of the places i have mention for you to look at from the above post... picasaweb.google.co.uk/seaangler/030720071

Thanks for the suggestions. We are certainly able to do enough walking to visit the tourist attractions, we are just not in the right shape to go hiking deep into the woods.

the Mae Sa valley loop you could see the Mae Sa elephant camp and the queens botanical garden and come back around to Doi Suthep in 1 day the zoo is cool but very spread out and hilly they have Pandas there and the you can spend a couple of evenings at the night market

...Callao..As i said the zoo is spred out but they would be o/k in a tuk tuk as the driver will take them around in the tuk tuk...Chris

Try to go to the %26#39;Riverside%26#39; restaurant. Very nice by the river and a great menu to choose from.

2 things you should not miss:

    1. The Sunday Markets (if you are there on a Sunday)

    2. A Thai Cooking Class at www.alotofthai.com - they also do short night courses... so you could maybe squeeze a night one in.. instead of the full day course..

    Reet xx

Thanks for the suggestions. I had not considered the zoo but it might be fun. We live near Washington DC and have seen the pandas there but it might be fun to see some other pandas. We are also interested in a cooking class. I will look into it. Thanks for the great suggestions.

Check the Khom Khan Tok Restaurant near Robinson. They have true local Northern foods (sticky rice with stuff) and traditional performance and dancing. Very lovely. You sit on the floor with a very low table. Too bad I can%26#39;t locate the brochure to give you the exact address.

As stated, Wat Prathat Doi Suthep is essential. If you%26#39;re into Orchids a look around at Mae Rim Orchid %26amp; Butterfly Farm is a nice way to spend an hour or two.

  • Do we need vacinations

Just booked 10 nights at Evason Hua Hin in September, never been to Thailand before and friends have advised we must have vacinations. Is it essential, has anybody been there without having had jabs?

    Do we need vacinations

surely the common sense answer is.....ask your doctor!!!!!

    Do we need vacinations

    Thanks for that,

surprisingly i have already done that, my question was has anybody travelled without and not had any problems

We%26#39;ve been coming here for years without any jabs and have not suffered from anything whatsoever, however if you intend to travel deep into the jungle areas it would be advisable to have taken precautions for malaria plus the hepetitus virus. But if just touring around the normal tourist area%26#39;s then I feel they are not essential but some may say better safe than sorry.

    Hi cli,

Many thanks for that, we will try to get the relevant jabs but i am not sure that we have enough time for them to take effect before we travel. We dont have any plans to venture off the beaten track, just BKK to Hua Hin and return by road.

    Thanks again .... friup

moving from UK - Thailand - lock stock and barrel

    Hi,

I will be moving to Thailand from the UK in May 2008. This is a permanent move and I have no wish to return to the UK.

I am hoping that I may be able to get most of my household effects over in a 30ft container but have so far received two quotes of over 拢3,000 which has disappointed me.

Anyone any help or advice on this matter. Even a slow train, cattle wagon or space hopper would be preferable to paying that sort of price.

    Dragonfly 151

moving from UK - Thailand - lock stock and barrel

That%26#39;s actually cheaper - $8000US - than we paid to send a container from the US to BKK.

moving from UK - Thailand - lock stock and barrel

    Hello :

Good luck to you for a Big move here.

Bangkok is a nice city for a short time holidays.

However, for a permanent relocation , I need to do a lot

    of soul research.

    Enjoy your trip,

    Hi

when I retire to thailand soon. I am not taking anything

I will sell everything I don%26#39;t want to save or give to my son

none of my electrical items will work there. anyway.

then buy everything new or spend yrs finding the right decor for our house.

besides non of my furishings will match Thailand style.

the only things i might ship would be cars or motorcycle but I am afraid the dutys and tariffs might be cost prohibitive.

I will have to check more when the time comes.

good luck on your move. which part of thailand are you moving too?

    Hello :

I am not ready to retire yet, still have a lot of years in the USA.

labor work force to build up the retirement funds.

I can see that I shall be enjoy doing the travel before make an

    permanent home for retirement.

We are in America have more choices in south Americas

settlements besides the S.E. Asia .

    Enjoy your trip,

拢3,000 would buy a hell of a lot of stuff in Thailand. Wouldn%26#39;t it be better to sell up and buy new stuff there? I don%26#39;t think you are going to get much better than that price which is a slow train/ship price already.

How do you get around the visa? I%26#39;ve heard people take a train down to Butterworth once a month to renew theirs. If you stay without a visa and get caught it%26#39;s prison if you can%26#39;t pay a fine of 500 baht a day overstay and a Thai prison is your worst nightmare.

What happens if you are sick? When I took early retirement I moved to France which has better health care than the UK.

I spend from early December till early March in Thailand though. I like visiting the place but would not like to live there permanently. I have side trips planned to Hong Kong and Singapore (with AirAsia) to break up the monotony.

Have you ever spent months in Thailand? I would suggest you try it before you burn bridges behind you. It ain%26#39;t paradise and unending heat and humidity is not everyone%26#39;s idea of fun. Snow looks good to me after 3 months there.

    Hello :

I must agree that the Immigrations laws in Thailand is very

strictly for the farangs who want to live in here permanantly

which is understandle for economics reasons. However,

Thailand is the best place in S.E.Asia for tourists .

The P.I. is a better offering place to get a retiree Visa.

and is only 1hr30min. fly from Bangkok. If you are getting marry

with a local Thai%26#39;s , things may be easier for immigrant Visa

    Enjoy your trip,

    Hello:

Here is a shocking news for the EU. people . You can easily

to retire in the USA with a lifestyle and We are in the first world

country . The Euro is incredible high valued against the usd

and still going up, consequently, everything in the USA. is a

bargain for the Europeans . Don%26#39;t move to Thailand , move to

USA. and finally, the Americans retire must move to S.E.ASia

or the South America to escape hi cost living .

    Enjoy your trip,

One person%26#39;s opinion - I can%26#39;t to get out of here!!!!!! We%26#39;re SE Asia bound.

Hi, I made the same move back in February 2002 and though it hurt to give away things like practicaly new furniture and sell other household goods at a fraction of the cost you do have to way up the cost of shipping which sounds like a reasonable amount you have been quoted.

You really do not have to bring anything but your suitcases and clothes, furniture is cheap compared to the UK and is available in modern design similar to shops like Ikea, there are also expat run furniture shops selling classical designs as well , most electrical goods are the same or cheaper in price than the UK though plasma tv%26#39;s are a little more expensive here.

I have been trying to think why you would want to bring a container full of stuff over here in the first place, if you have a collection of antique furniture or something else you really do not want to let go off, my advice is if you really are going to make a break with the UK start again from scratch and let go of the past, or put the stuff in storage in the UK and see how you feel in 12 months time.

    Hello :

If I ever move to aboards for retirements , I propably don%26#39;t have

much stuff in tow besides clothings and personal documents.

Obviously, the most important personal properties are the

financial sitiuations with all the investments and pension funds

set up to make sure those source of income keep flowing into

banking accounts. Other than that , You can just purchase almost

everything else once settle in Bangkok or anywhere else .

However, If you are married then all bets are off !

    Enjoy your trip,

15 hr layover bt/wn flights, Leave airport or get dayroom ?

    Hi

We are having a long layover in BKK in between flights to CMB. The layover is 10+ odd hrs. We%26#39;re supposed to get to BKK at 6 AM or so.. and flying out to CMB around 8 PM. Thai Airways said they provide a hotel for free/give vouchers to a hotel called ';Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok'; and its rated as # 100 on tripadvisor. There are plenty bad reviews there about their service.

Now, I wonder how much time it will take early morning and late evening to travel from the new airport to the hotel ? I just dont want to miss my flights. They are supposed to have a free shuttle to the hotel. Otherwise I%26#39;ll just take a cab. Either way, need to know the distance with traffic. I%26#39;ve heard conflicting things about the time. Some say it took them 30-40 min, others said it took an hour.

I%26#39;m debating whether I should just get a dayroom and not leave the airport given the time limits.

Oh I%26#39;m also travelling with 2 kids, and will need a place to crash after the super long haul flights.

    Thanks

    Sam

15 hr layover bt/wn flights, Leave airport or get dayroom ?

    Hi

    how old are the kids

I would take Thai airways up on their vouchers

if they have a free shuttle must be close to airport.

that is a long time to set in the airport even in day rooms

the kids can swim if they have a pool and you can get a nice rest or explore and shop..

but hotels usually won%26#39;t let you check in until 2 or later

    be sure and double check.

you will have to clear customs. if you leave the transit area.

but your bags will probably be checked thru.

so will need clothes in carry on for change.

you have too much time during the day not to explore Bangkok.

15 hr layover bt/wn flights, Leave airport or get dayroom ?

CMB is Sri Lanka right?.. and you are arriving from the US?...

If so, I%26#39;m pretty sure that you need all the rest that you can get after a long haul..

Just take the room.. Freshen up.. rest.. let the kids use the pool and get as much sleep as they can. The room(s) will be made available to you on your arrival at the hotel. I haven%26#39;t been to this hotel

At the old BKK airport, Thai air used a very nice hotel very close to the airport.. Just go with the deal..

If you think you have the energy... take a taxi from the hotel into town and go and see the palace or something... Taxifare would only be 300 Baht or so each way.

BTW.. the time it would take between airport and hotel will vary a lot.. depending on time of day... Peakhour trafic in Bangkok is a nightmare at the best of time.. and you arrive right in the midlle of morning peakhour.. and would need to get to the airport during afternoon rush... But just let the Thai air shuttle worry about that...

    Hi

    Thanks for the replies.

OK I checked my itinerary again and I%26#39;m coming to BKK on a Sunday early morning around 6:40 AM. And leaving at 10 PM. Whats traffic like on Sundays ?

Coming back, we arrive on a Thursday morning 6 AM and leaving 7 :40 PM. My kids are 4 and 2.

Any hotels you recommend that is quite close to the new BKK airport ?

(in case they don%26#39;t give the promised voucher or the hotel screwed up on the reservation) Which brings me to my next question... if we are supposed to get a voucher as part of the ticket, do we need to make a reservation ahead of time with the hotel directly ? Or does the airline guarantee it ?

Re; reservation.. the airline will arrange it all for you. Thai air is pretty reliable.... I would just make the most of it.. can%26#39;t remember if I had a voucher or not... but if they state that its all included.. it will be fore sure..

Also take into account that if you book a hotel.. check in time is likely something like 2 PM... Noon at the earliest.. unless you make special arangements..

The hotel given to you by Thai air would be from whenever they drop you there.. untill they pick you up again...

Re: traffic... the Sunday should be ok.... but the Thursday may take you a bit longer.

Trouble with the new airport is that there%26#39;s only one hotel really close by. (walking distance.. The Novotel... There are some dayrooms in the airport itself... but for your use.. if you choose not to use the hotel arranged by your airline.. you are better of just getting a car into town.. I%26#39;d say.. Cost of a taxi is only 300 to 400 Baht each way....

Depending on your pricerange and requirements.. you will have lots to choose from.

Places like the Majestic Grande.. Sofitel Silom or Dynasty Inn Grande .. Shop around for a good deal on line.. asiaroms, asiatravel, sawadee, res24, hoteltravel, atsiam, asiabesthotel, directrooms, wired-destinations, hotelthailand, Passionasia, agoda, planetholiday, precisionreservations, hotels2thailand would be worthwhile checking for deals.

The problem with the whole voucher is.. there is absolutely nothing written down anywhere on the airline ticket, that we can see, or on the travel documents Thai Airways sent us mentioning we will get a hotel night. It was something Thai said over the phone.

I%26#39;m almost inclined to go with a slightly better hotel and much more closer to the airport. I%26#39;d have loved to go with the Marriott Bangkok resort but I%26#39;ve heard its quite far.

Thanks a lot for those links. Will try them out.

If Thai Air is offering you a free hotel - take it! What%26#39;s the beef, it%26#39;s a hotel that is close to $100 a night! (If I have the right hotel, that is!)

Thousands of tourists are happy to find a place with air, private toilet and hot water for under 1000 baht! The price of this Sofitel is 2000 baht more than I pay for my place!

It is a good deal if Thai Air provides the hotel and ride, it%26#39;s not like you will be there a long time. You only need a place to take a shower and for the kids to rest a bit.

You have 15 hours to kill, riding a bus has to be more exciting than sitting in the airport in a plastic chair.

Even if it took an hour to get to the hotel and an hour to return that is a couple hours you are not cooling your heels at the airport with a couple tired and (maybe) cranky kids!

There is a hotel at the airport, I think the price is around $100 plus per night. You could try to get Thai Air to pay part of that price if you are getting a free voucher because they screwed up!

    Good luck.

my wife and I stayed at the airport Novotel in a dayroom (8am to 6pm). It cost about 拢55 and was spacious and clean. The pool was an oasis in the midst of the hotel. Rooms were quiet and the bathrooms very roomy. A hotel courtesy bus operates between the airport and hotel every 5-10 mins. If you can get Thai Air to subsidise it is ideal.

Is the weather still bad in Ko Samui?

Am flying off there tomorrow - am quite worried after reading Supeduper%26#39;s report.

Is the weather still bad in Ko Samui?

Yes - have to say its been overcast for a number of days...it did get sunny this morning and hot then just plain ol overcast %26amp; windy...still warm though!! %26amp; still relaxing....hope that helps:)

Is the weather still bad in Ko Samui?

Thanks for your reply. Went to Maldives last year and had a week of poor weather - the second week was great though. Surely can%26#39;t be that unlucky two years on the trot. Am staying at Bo Phut resort, just hope there%26#39;s some sunshine at some point during the two weeks I%26#39;m there.

Prediction: You%26#39;ll get at least 10 days good weather. a bit of a gambler, so I look forward to your jbr report!

Well I hope you%26#39;re right - it%26#39;s been pouring down in Manchester for weeks, the weather is terrible. Just need to see some sunshine.

tell me about it, this weather stinks in england.

going to ko samui sept the 7th.

do any of you know what weather i should expect then??

    need sunshine badly

we are also heading out on sept 8th. we were in bkk and samui last year for the same time. only saw heavy rain on the last day of our trip in bkk. most days it would rain for a little while almost every day but not until late afternoon - i only remember getting drenched one night when the main street on chaweng flooded. it was sunny a few days but to be honest it was nicer when it was cloudy - still v hot and managed to get burnt through the clouds tho! any questions just ask

And there I was thinking it had been raining in manchester for years!

Must say, the weather ain%26#39;t good anywhere in Thailand at the moment (as I type this in BKK it is absolutely bucketing down). Samui,so far this year, according to a friend who has been living there for 22 years says he can%26#39;t remember so many rainy/cloudy days. Now this could possibly mean that the island is soon set for a long periods of settled weather, or weather patterns are even more messed up than we all thought. It certainly would be a toss-up (no pun intended) as to whether Thailand or Wimbledon could get the tournament finished at the moment.Remember- even on what are considered bad weather days on Samui the sun will poke through long enough, the rain will ease off, and a sun tan is pretty much guranteed.

Thanks you have made me feel a little better - read one post yesterday on here very negative about KS and it ruined my day. Sometimes you can get too much information on Internet. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Samui is fab and you will love it rain or shine.

People forget that you can still get burnt under that cloud cover. It%26#39;s got to be better than the UK at the moment. Having said that we were in Samui for a month in May and had loads and loads of rain and then came home to the weather here/ I am very brown but it is rust !!

is it the same type of weather around Koh Phagnan and Koh Tao?

any safe place to put luggage?

my flight leaves at 1:30 am.

so i%26#39;ll be leaving the hotel around 11pm

and the hotel i%26#39;ll be saying at told me i need to pay

half of the day%26#39;s rate to stay until 6pm.

that is ok.but what should i do after 6pm?

should i just pay the whole day%26#39;s rate and just stay until 11pm?

or is there any way to do this economically.?

any safe place to put luggage?

Most hotels will store our lugagge for free, in my experience. So you could leave our luggage in a storeroom and go and have tea or whatever, and return to pick up your lugage later.

Or, you could just, quite simply, not go home. I didn%26#39;t.

    Mark.

any safe place to put luggage?

    Hi Jeica8,

Mark has the best idea, don%26#39;t go home but seriously as he has said all the hotels have a storage area so you can leave your baggage and they will all let you still use their facilities until you depart.

    Cheers, Pete.

Our Road Trip with Richard & Megumi to Ranong & Beyond

Finally I am at the end of our little reports on our holiday. I tried to make it shorter - really!!

We had organized to have a 2 day break with Richard %26amp; Megumi so we left it up to them as to where we would go etc, wow did they plan a great weekend.

They picked us up on the Saturday morning, Megumi had her hand drawn serviette map ready of the places they wanted to go and off we went.

We are going to Ranong – the wettest place in Thailand!!

Now Ranong is only 300 kilometers from Phuket but it took us nearly 9 hours to get there with all the stops and sightseeing we did along the way! Just after we left the island and stopped for fuel Gary took over the driving so Richard could be a tourist for once (and for some reason Gary loves driving in Thailand) Megumi and I were in the back of course.

We stopped at beautiful bamboo furniture places and if I had a house in Phuket all the furniture would be bamboo – so much cheaper than at home.

Around 2pm we stopped at a market/bus meal stop for lunch. It was like a food court but all the signs were in Thai so I found something that sort of looked ok and had it with rice. Gary had the same. It was some sort of chicken curry that was about to blow my head off, very cheap here, lunch cost 15baht each. It would have been nicer if I didn’t get all the boney bits of the chicken with no meat on them (or parts I didn’t recognize ha-ha)

After lunch we headed for Ton Phet Waterfall, it took us ages to find this place, off the main road onto rough dirt tracks, talk about being out in the wilderness, I kept thinking what if we cant turn around at the end and I’m sure Megumi was thinking the same. Eventually we came to the end of the track and there was some sort of small waterfall with an old rickety falling down bridge going across the stream.

Of course Richard had to cross it, even though it looked like it was ready to fall down!!

We didn’t stay here long and with directions from Richard, Gary managed to turn the car around (of course Megumi and I stayed out of the car while this was going on – just in case, as it was a bit tight). Off to the right there was another dirt track so off we went, this track was a bit boggy so there was a little bit of sliding around. At the end was a swimming hole with a Thai family bathing, it was a lovely spot, perfect for a drink break.

Back on the road to Ranong and the scenery is just beautiful and changes so often. It’s so lush and green – just perfect.

On the outskirts of Ranong we started seeing lots of police and soldiers, then a huge checkpoint manned by soldiers with machine guns, well, I don’t think I will chance taking a photo of them, though would have loved to!!

We arrived in Ranong at about 7pm and checked into the Royal Princess Hotel where Richard %26amp; Megumi had already booked us all in. It’s a lovely hotel in the commercial district. I took lots of photos of course ha-ha. We had room service and were all tucked in by about 8pm as it was to be an early start the next day.

When Gary and I went down at 7am for breakfast Richard %26amp; Megumi were already there, now the buffet brekky here is not like most of us are use to, I didn’t recognize anything except the eggs but it all smelt good so I piled my plate up. – Yikes it time for an exploding head again, some of the hottest food I have ever eaten. But it was also really nice and tasty

First stop was a look at the boats leaving for visa runs to Victoria Point Myanmar (Burma) you can see Burma and the trip takes about 20 minutes.

Then its north of Ranong to find the Phra Khayang Cave (ok I know I said no more caves but I wasn’t going to disappoint Richard %26amp; Megumi as everywhere we are going today is a first for them as well)

Legend has it that the governor of Kraburi took his son to this cave, tied him to an easel and left him there to die because the boy had an affair with his stepmother

This beautiful cave was easy to find but as soon as we got out of the car the stench of bat urine hit us, it was so powerful. Not a problem though, I prefer bats to spiders.

    This cave was fantastic;

I have never seen so many bats before or walked in so much bat crap!!!Lots and lots of stairs to climb up some very narrow and slippery in places but it was a great cave with lots of stalactites and stalagmites. We went as far as the stairs went as then it became quite dangerous, extremely slippery but we nearly made it to the very top.

We came out of this cave boiling hot, sweaty and reeking of bat urine so now we need to head for waterfalls to have a bath but there’s a little detour on the way.

Next on Megumi and Richards list is Khao Fa Chi, the remains of an old railway line and train, a Japanese warship and underground tunnels. The Japanese army used this area to supply war materials to their army in Myanmar (Burma).

Well after much looking we found the railway line and train. Gary %26amp; Richard were on a mission to find the tunnels but after ages of looking they were nowhere to be seen. We didn’t find the Japanese warship either but have found out since we came home you can only see it at low tide!! Oh well maybe next year.

Now its time to go to Punyaban Waterfall only 10 minutes north of Ranong. It’s so easy to find as it’s virtually 20 feet from the road.

This waterfall is beautiful, it’s about 20 metres high and there are three levels surrounded by a lush green forest. The waterfall originates from small streams in the forest preservation area named La Un and Rachakrud Forest. There is also a 300 metre nature walk, restaurants, toilets, lots of shade, lovely places to sit and relax, but none of that for me %26amp; Megumi, we were getting in (plus I still had bat crap on my legs)

The water was icy cold, it was so good to cool off and be clean again, lots of locals were here having picnics and loads of kids in one of the deeper pools swimming around. We stayed here for quite awhile as it was just so beautiful.

I should mention my episode in the deeper pool, I though it would be nice to be in water higher than my knees so decided to venture down the rocks to the deep pool, I was nearly there and about to take another step and instantly knew I was going to fall.

My foot slid out from under me, I landed on my backside and did the big slide into the deep pool down the rocks, lucky for me the huge rock sloped into this pool and not over the edge down to the next big drop.

When I surfaced all I could do was laugh as there were all these Thai families standing there looking at me, I laughed and then everyone started laughing. Not a scratch or bruise on me. I stayed in this pool for awhile sussing different ways to get out (and plucking up the courage to get out) up onto the slippery rocks and happy to say I made it out!!

Thank god Gary didn’t have the camera handy!!

Wow we have done all of this already and it’s only about 12pm.

Ok on to the next adventure, the one Megumi %26amp; I had been looking forward to, we are off to the Ranong Hot Springs and Raksawarin Arboretum about 2 kilometers east of Ranong

These springs have been popular ever since King Rama V visited in 1890 and named the road to the springs “Chon Ra-u” which means hot water.

This place is absolutely beautiful and it’s all free!!.

There is a lovely lush green forest surrounding the springs called Raaksawarin and there are little undercover eateries. Over the road there is a deep swimming area which is where Megumi %26amp; I left Richard %26amp; Gary, as the water was cold here so off we went exploring.

We decided to try out the hot spring pools, these are 3 natural spring pools and the temperature remains a constant 65 degrees Celsius.

You sit on little stools and put your feet in the water, I could only do this for a matter of seconds as the water is sooo hot.

We came across a huge open building with a cement floor about the size of 3 basketball courts and wondered what it was. Amazing it’s a place to sit or lie but only for about 30 minutes as the cement is heated by the hot springs. I don’t think I would have lasted 10 minutes lying on that floor – tooo hot!! Though doctors send people to these springs for their medicinal purposes.

There is a lovely rocky creek running through the centre of all of this, this is the run off from the hot springs, lots of minerals in this milky water.

Now this is better, the water is a lovely temperature, the sun is shining and the setting is perfect. It’s so hard to describe this place as it is just so beautiful and well maintained. It’s extremely popular with the Thai’s and there was not another westerner in sight.

Megumi and I were really enjoying this lovely peaceful experience – then everything changed. I had a feeling that I was being watched by a large group of people on the bank and mentioned it to Megumi. I had swimmers on but had covered up with a large singlet as well. (The people in the water here and at the waterfalls before were covered up)

Megumi could hear them talking and said they were not Thai so maybe they were Burmese. Then a little girl got in the water and shyly said hello, so of course I said hello back, she then splashed me so I splashed her back. Then it was on, everyone on the bank jumped in, they were all fully dressed, guys in jeans and shirts, girls in dresses etc.

It was hilarious, the worlds biggest water fight, I was surrounded by about 10 people, little kids, big kids, teenagers, adults – you name it they were there. One of the guys spoke a few words of English and once the water fight settled down we all tried to talk to one another, these lovely friendly people were from Burma.

They were touching my hands, feeling my hair, comparing our skin colors, holding my hands, I had kids arms around my neck giving me hugs, they were even hanging onto my toes!!!!

It was just the most amazing experience.

Then it started to rain, well actually it poured but Megumi and I plus all my new friends still stayed in the water, I don’t think anyone wanted this strange experience to end. Then Megumi went to get Gary %26amp; Richard so they could see what was happening to me, plus I wanted a photo with all my new friends’ ha-ha.

Sadly Gary could not get a photo as the rain was now torrential and he couldn’t find anywhere undercover to be able to take the camera out. Time to get out of the water now and after lots of hugs and goodbyes the Burmese family had to leave.

What an experience, something I will never forget.

Ok after all of that its time for some shelter and lunch, we headed for an undercover area, dripping wet and let Richard %26amp; Megumi order lunch for us. It was delicious, 2 plates of bbq chicken pieces, lots of sticky rice, papaya salad, pork and drinks, from memory the bill for this was about 300baht and it was one of the best meals we have had in Thailand.

It’s now pretty late in the afternoon and the torrential rain doesn’t look like its going to stop so its time for our drive back to Phuket. I hate driving in bad rain so this is not going to be a good trip back for me but I have to admit it was ok and Gary took it real easy.

On the way to Ranong we passed Ngao Waterfall, this huge waterfall can be seen from huge distances due to its massive height, well you should have seen it on the way back. With all the rain it was double the width, we were miles away but could see huge amounts of water cascading down. We pulled into a garage so I could try to take some photos from under my umbrella.

Through the zoom the whole mountain range (within Khlong Phrao National Park) had water cascading down, though this does not show up in the photos, it was a very spectacular sight and we couldn’t believe how much it had changed from the day before. The photos do not do it justice, actually all the photos from this weekend do not show how beautiful the places we went to were.

We arrived in Khao Lak at dusk and there was one more stop. Somehow when Gary and I were in Khao Lak we could not find the police boat that was bought ashore during the tsunami, so Richard made sure we saw it.

The rain had let up quite a bit by now, it was late but there was one more little stop at Thalang, lets go to the Halal Food Festival, well we tried to but the traffic and parking was so bad we turned around and left.

Finally we arrived back at Swiss Palm about 9.30pm, we were all so tired but happy as we had had such a great weekend together. It was also sad as this was time to say goodbye to Richard %26amp; Megumi, they planned the perfect weekend and we cannot thank them enough for this, wonder what they have planned for Road Trip No. 2 next year, should be interesting!!.

Photos from this weekend are here:

Our Road Trip with Richard %26amp; Megumi to Ranong %26amp; Beyond

    hi Cathy and Gary,

Wow your trip sounded fantastic. Don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve read my post but we are going back to Phuket in Sept. This is definately the sort of thing we would love to do. maybe our friend mr sam could do something like this with us, although it seems he is pretty busy these days

What is the Swiss palms like. am looking for nice cheap accom for this trip. any suggestions. 1000-2000 baht per day??? per room

    regards Lizg1313

Hi there Liz, seems like forever since I last spoke to you.

If you go to Ranong you would definately need to overnight as theres heaps to see arounbd the area.

We really enjoyed our time at Swiss Palm, the hotel has everything we want and its so good being in an apartment, the pool is small but lovely and we have never stayed anywhere beofre where the staff and management have been so friendly and helpful.

I took heaps of photos of the hotel and a few other apartments - 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom, they are on the link below.

We liked it there so much we have just changed our booking for next year to 3 months. (Now we can do lots more road trips haha)

Hey Cathy, what fun you guys had. That little girl must have been really cute.

When you guys go back to Ranong, you must check out the Ranong Canyon, it%26#39;s really beautiful. It looks like a set for a movie. The lake is chock-a-block with fish that you can buy food for and feed. Ranong is a lovely spot!

Hi Cathy, thanks for the great read. What an experience you%26#39;ve had, and beautiful memories that your left with. Loved the photo%26#39;s as well. Thanks Cathy,

    Rene

Thanks Cathy, will check out the photos. can%26#39;t believe we are going back . It wasn%26#39;t on our agenda for this year. Just a last minute decision, hence the need for cheaper accom.
