Clothes to wear

Hi Everyone

I need your experienced help on a matter causing great concern in my house. My Fiance is a bit of a sun worshipper and does her best to avoid any sort of strap lines. We%26#39;re in Bangkok for 4 days at the start of our holiday before moving onto Ko Samui.

She understands the need to cover up when in places like the palace etc but really can%26#39;t find out if she%26#39;ll offend anyone by generally being around in the day wearing a shortish skirt, a strapless top and flip flops like normal holidays. Will she be ok like this or will she need longer skirts and sleeved t-shirts for during the day.

Any tips or advice on this would be brilliant

Thanks in advance

HI

she should have no problem around the hotel and pool but out around in the city.

how do I put this with no disrespect if she is a larger lady or have ample bossoom then she might get stared at and hear snide remarks.

the heat is so hot and oppressive in Bangkok that is why the locals cover up.

and they keep the shopping malls so damn cold you almost need a jacket.

If we were going sight seeing my thai fiancee%26#39; would wear capri type pants and a sleeveless top and nice shoes ';thai%26#39;s love shoes';

but don%26#39;t all women. if we were going shopping inside she would wear long pants and long sleeves

but take your cue form the local%26#39;s the thai girls always look sharpe in their short skirts and light long sleeve tops.

during the day usually the only ones wearing short skirts and halter or strapless tops out around the city are ladyboys.

Just remember that Bangkok is the capital city and that apart from tourist places there are alot of office/business people too.

As the previous writer said, the shopping malls, skytrain, underground and hotels can be really chilly with air conditioning.

Just put it this way - would your fiance wear beach clothes in the centre of London while visiting Big Ben and Pall Mall? If the answer is yes, then she will be fine.

However, do be aware that short skirts, and strapless tops will offend the Thais in Bangkok (even if they don%26#39;t actually say anything, as they tolerate tourists well). Koh Samui is the holiday isle and more relaxed dressing is appropriate for Westerners.

So, it may well be yourself that feels uncomfortable, when you observe the more covered up look favoured by the locals and many travellers!

You are obviously concerned as you raised the question, therefore I think you should go for the conservative look until you have sussed out your surroundings on day one.

Other than temples and official historical government tourist attractions she might be able to get by with skimpy clothing.

If the shirt shirt she wears covers very little and the skirt is really, really short she can get a way with it! If she is blonde even better, women in Bangkok , Phuket and Pattaya who look real slutty are often assumed to be Russian hookers.

She can put a thin wrap-a-round (silk like) skirt in her day bag along with a long sleeve shirt that when needed she can quickly put on.

Look at the photos on the overview section of the different places you want to go.Look into the backgrounds and you%26#39;ll see what some people wear.

I quite happily wear shorts when I go to Benidorm, but I would never dream of wearing them in Rome.

Different countries,different cultures.

I can quite empathasise with your girlfriend as I am the same. When I have been to Malaysia I have worn what I want and sometimes got stares but I just got used to it after a while and Malaysia is predominantly a Muslim country. I wear what makes me feel comfortable and appreciate other cultures, etc, however I am open to other cultural dress here in the UK and in global societies we live in now, we should appreciate that others dress how they like and differently.

My advice would be wear what makes you feel most comfortable as its your holiday you%26#39;ve toiled for and you want to enjoy it. Don%26#39;t worry what others think. I know others will disagree but again its personal opinion.
