Getting paintings back to Australia

Hi all,

I have noticed that a number of you have mentioned that you have purchased %26#39;large%26#39; paintings of Thai art and I was wondering how you got them back to Australia? Did you bring them back with you or did you arrange to have them sent back separately? I am interested in any suggestions on how to tranport art back as i would like to purchase some art for a friend for Xmas/

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Getting paintings back to Australia

Hi Leanne

We have bought artwork back each time we have been to Phuket and each time they have taken it off the frame and rolled it up for us and packaged it. We have then carried it on as hand luggage for our flights back home. This has been no problem at all for us. I have also seen a lady bring back her artwork still on the frame ... was rather large to carry and also had to have it checked at customs because of the wood ...

Cheers

Jo

Getting paintings back to Australia

Hi Jo,

Thanks for coming back to me. I didn%26#39;t even think about the option of having it taken off the frame and then carrying it on board as hand luggage. :-)

I would definately reccomend taking off frame and having it rolled. I brought mine back on the frame in the middle of my suitcase. Because of the change in temperature, and having been painted in such hot conditions, mine had to be taken off and restretched anyway. Costs about $25 to have re stretched onto a similar frame.

Hi Leanne,

We purchased a beautiful painting in Bali in 2004, took it off the frame, rolled it up carefully and packed it in our luggage only to find it was crushed flat when we got home. It still hangs on our wall and its only Jane and i that see the crush marks but we were devastated when we opened up our luggage.

To stop this from happening we take a length of 65mm PVC pipe in our luggage and if you put it diagonally across your suitcase you can get a length of about 1.2 Metres. Now any paintings we bring back are in perfect condition and we re frame when we get back home.

It only takes up a small amount of room and if you don%26#39;t buy anything you can roll t shirts etc. up in it to bring back.

Cheers, Pete.

Hi Pete,

Thnx for the great pipe suggestion. I%26#39;ll definitely be passing that tip around to the girls so that we will all be prepared to bring something back if we find it.

Also, just as a general comment. I have also been browsing another Travel Tree forum, looking at hints, tips, tours, suggestions %26amp; recommendations as well this site as this is the first time that any of us will be travelling to Phuket and Ko Samui and I find that the members of this site who contribute and respond are so much more friendlier, helpful and fun than those who contribute to the other. I have told all my girlfirends to check this site out and they have said the same thing so a big THANK YOU to everybody who contributes to this forum.
